About Ember Deflector

Ember Deflector
What is an ember attack?

An ember attack is a naturally occurring event. During a wildfire, burning material becomes airborne. It can be carried along by the fire or driven ahead by prevailing winds. Airborne embers from a fire are the primary cause of spot fires, which contribute to the continued spread of a fire. Ember attacks occur close to the hottest source of the fire, usually following a heat explosion from within vegetation. Material is ejected by the explosion and creates a cluster of embers.

What are the effects of ember’s on property?

Because embers can be carried miles from a wildfire or structure fire by the wind, they threaten nearby property. Fire authorities advise homeowners to be vigilant before and after a fire. Embers ignite materials outside the home. A danger exists from embers entering the home through the eave vents. Homeowners should inspect for signs of fire in the attic and crawl spaces. A smoke detector placed in the attic can act as an early warning system if fire begins there.

Does the Ember Deflector have to meet local building codes?

The Ember Deflector is a retrofitted device. It does not take the place of a vent. As such, it does not require a permit to install. It does not violate building codes because it does not obstruct the vent holes when the doors are open. We have put it through a flame test that simulated the temperature and intensity of fires greater than we have experienced. The temperature in the simulated attic space never reached a flammable level.

How does the Ember Deflector work?

The Ember Deflector is made from high quality stainless steel. Its simple design allows you to slide the doors shut over your eave holes when fire danger is imminent. The doors slide open just as easily allowing the important task of ventilating your home to continue.

Can Ember Deflector’s save my home from wildfires?

By itself the Ember Deflector will give your home a greater chance of surviving a fire. When used in conjunction with a detailed fire prevention strategy, a stucco exterior and a class A rated roof, most homes will survive a fire with minimal damage.
