Robustiano Alvaréz (Contemporary)

As a nickname, he is called "Dutchman" by his friends, since he started to paint and sculpt in the Netherlands. Sometimes he signs as "Van der Ridder" or "Phare". Southern Argentina was his place of residence and professional education during the first decade of his life. Now he shifts to and from Bahia Blanca and foreign countries.

His means of expression are paintings with oil, pastels and tempera on traditional surfaces (cloth, paper and wood) and other less common media. He has a tendency to experiment with tridimensional effects based on color contrasts. His topics are varied. They almost always include the human figure, and a surrealist inclination and social preoccupation is perceived.

The artist has worked in South America, Europe, Nepal and Hawaii, and at present, he exposes in the USA. Nowdays, in the edition of this book, he has illustrated tango poems by the most outstanding tango poets and includes anecdotes by Jorge Luis Borges. In the Fandango section, the influence of Garcia Lorca is noticeable.
