The sea is an essential part of life on this planet and we depend on it in many ways. Unfortunately pollution, poorly planned development ofthe coast, overfishing and a lack of administration threaten this treasure. The ocean is losing its ability to regenerate. Fishermen are forced to go further out into the ocean only to find smaller fish in lesser quantities.

The California Congress passed a law that requires the creation of marine protected areas. We are aiming at a well-designed network, following the example of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and Monterrey Bay National Marine Sactuary.

The Underwater Parks of California are located primarily along the coastline, stretching from Mendocino County in the north to San Diego County in the south.  However, four of the underwater parks, Mono Lake, D.L. Bliss, Emerald Bay-Lake Tahoe and Lake Perris are located in the interior of the state.

Organizations like Wildlife Conservation California support the creation of new marine protected areas in California. Please visit http://www.wildcoast.net for more information.
